Royal Profile: HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland was born 14 July 1977, and is the eldest and oldest daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. She has two younger siblings-Prince Carl Phillip (1979), and Princess Madeline (1982).

She was baptised at the Palace Church on 27 September 1977 and given the names Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée. Her godparents are King Harald V of Norway, her maternal uncle, Ralf Sommerlath, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and her aunt Princess Désirée, Baroness Silfverschiöld. She was named in honor of various relatives- Her first name comes primarily from her great-great-grandmother, Victoria of Baden, the queen-consort of Sweden as wife of King Gustaf V. The same name also glorifies her (twice-over paternally) great-great-great-grandmother, Victoria of the United Kingdom. Her other names honour her great-aunt Ingrid of Denmark; her maternal grandmother, the Brazilian Alice Sommerlath (née de Toledo); and her ancestorDésirée Clary, the queen-consort of Charles XIV John and a former fiancée of Napoleon I of France.

She began attending school at Västerled Parish Pre-school from 1982-84. In the fall of 1984, she began to attend Smedslättsskolan in Bromma, where she completed her junior level. She completed her intermediate level at Ålstenskolan in Bromma and went on to pursue senior studies, following a Science and Social Studies programme, at Enskilda Gymnasiet upper secondary school in Stockholm. She graduated from upper secondary school in June 1996. She spent that summer gaining knowledge of foreign languages by taking trips to the US and Germany. During the 1996-97 academic year, The Crown Princess studied French at the Centre International D'Études Françaises at the Université Catholique de L'Ouest in Angers, France. In 1997-1998, she followed a specially designed programme in order to gain a general insight into the workings of the Riksdag (the Swedish Parliament) and the Swedish Government and began academic studies in Political Science and History at Yale University in the USA in the spring of 1998.
She has tried to keep her private life-boyfriends and a battle with Anorexia- away from the public eye. Because of this, we are only aware of two confirmed boyfriends. The first was in the mid-1990s to2001, Daniel Collert. The second was her now-husband, Daniel Westling in 2002. As for her eating disorder, she began suffering from Anorexia around 1996, and was confirmed in 1997. She moved to the United States in early 1998 to study at Yale University and receive professional help for her disorder away from the media.

Her engagement to Daniel Westling was approved and announced by the Swedish Courts on 24 February 2009. She married Daniel Westling, who became Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland on 19 June 2010. On 17 August 2011, it was announced that she and Prince Daniel were expecting their first child in March of 2012. The new baby girl was born 23 February 2012 at 4:26am, local time. The new princess of Sweden's name and duchary was announced on 24 February 2012 by her grandfather: Her Royal Highness Princess Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary of Sweden, Duchess of Östergötland. She was probably named after Count Folke Bernadotte's American born wife Estelle Romaine Manville, both of her grandmothers (2nd and 3rd names), and possible a godmother (Crown Princess Mary of Denmark?).

She has twelve godchildren, including four future monarchs. Many of which served as bridesmaids or pageboys at her wedding in June 2010. These children include:
  1. Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, daughter of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Norway.
  2. Prince Christian of Denmark, son of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark.
  3. Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, daughter of the Prince of Orange and Princess Maxima of the Netherlands.
  4. Princess Eléonore of Belgium, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Brabant.
  5. Prince Constantine-Alexios of Greece and Denmark, son of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Greece.
  6. Leopold Sommerlath, son of Victoria's cousin Patrick Sommerlath and Camilla Lundén.
  7. Diana Engsäll, daughter of Victoria's friends Andrea Brodin Engsäll and Niclas Engsäll.
  8. Ian Persson, son of Karl-Johan and Leonie Persson.
  9. Baroness Madeleine von Dincklage, daughter of Victoria's cousin Baroness Sybilla Ambler von Dincklage and Baron Cornelius von Dincklage.
  10. Vivien Sommerlath, daughter of Victoria's uncle Jörg Sommerlath and Simone Sommerlath.
  11. Giulia Sommerlath, daughter of her cousin Thomas Sommerlath and Susanne Sommerlath.
  12. Isabella Chloé Nilsson, daughter of one of her closest friends Caroline Kreuger Nilsson and Jesper Nilsson.

Op-Ed: The Pierre Casiraghi Incident

As you may have read over the weekend Pierre Casiraghi, who is presently third in line for the throne of the Principality of Monaco, was involved in a late-night bar brawl that got him sent to a NY area hospital, where he was treated and released for severe facial injuries.

As always, there have been numerous different stories from so-called “witnesses” who remain unnamed and it’s caused international attention because of who Pierre is and where it happened (and of course, 98% of them refer to him as Prince Pierre, which he isn’t…..).

Think about the moneymaker tabloid headline: “Prince gets into bar fight in NYC”. Real eye catching, isn’t it?

Thought so.

Sense the sarcasm.

Anyway- Two of the many stories that have gone viral now that are out go like this:
People Magazine first broke the story on Monday via their website, claiming the following information:
  1. Pierre and his friends (among them Stavros Niarchos III, Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and Diego Marroquim) were approaching Hoack's table and allegedly started a brawl.
  2. Police were called by Pierre’s crowd at 2:22am after they were allegedly attacked by former club owner Adam Hock after Casiraghi and his friends allegedly walked up to their table causing a scene.
  3. They spoke to an unnamed witness that claimed: “Pierre's face looked broken, with deep cuts and blood everywhere," a witness said after the fight. "He looked like he needed plastic surgery.”
In The New York Post's version:
  1. They agreed that the same unnamed witness stated:   “Pierre's face looked broken, with deep cuts and blood everywhere," a witness said after the fight. "He looked like he needed plastic surgery.”   and that both men were partying with friends at the club.
  2. That Pierre's group were being " “were being completely obnoxious,’’ insulting the models and swigging from a $500 bottle of vodka on Hock’s table. "
  3. The fight started with Hock punching Pierre accross the room, and then Stavros got involved, attempting to defend Pierre. Then Hock allegedly punched out Niarchos, 26, and quickly landed blows on downtown hipsters Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld, 27, and Diego Marroquin, 33 — as the flustered models frantically tried to break it up before it got worse than it was.
  4. Casiraghi was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released, and Hock was charged with numerous counts of assault.
  5. Hock was arrianed in NY Courts on Monday, where he said he was the victim. “I was defending myself and others,” he said. “Why aren’t [Casiraghi and his pals] handcuffed?” While Casiraghi's clan claim the opposite.
The (version I feel is the most accurate) Italian magazine, Iodonna reported a similar story, with a few of their own additions:
  1. Instead of being with a group of his male friends, he was sitting quietly in a corner with his girlfriend, Italian model, journalist, lawyer, and Columbia graduate student, Beatrice Borromeo.
  2. Instead of Pierre approaching him, Hock randomly attack Pierre for whatever reason.
  3. And it also states that Pierre is planning on suing the papers that brought out false information about the incident.
Here's my take:

Like I said: I believe the last version is the most accurate. I believe that yes, Beatrice was in fact with him. Strongly. Why? Easy, because I follow her on twitter, I see what she says (NO, don't ask me for it), and so far, from Beatrice, it sounds as if Pierre was in fact the victim in the incident. The truth will come out in the courts. Until then, boys will be boys, especially when achol is involved! And Pierre won't go anywhere without a security guard! Ha.

UPDATE: 2 March 2012. Photos have been released by two different sources, both claiming to be "the real first photos since the Pierre incident". ONE is, one is not. The photo from demorgen.be (Photo) is a current photo, clearly.   The ones from The NY Daily News (Photo) are photos from either his uncle's 2011 Wedding or the Grand Prix, as the background is CLEARLY Monaco. You would not find a street in NY that looks like that. Ever.

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan was born 21 Februrary 1980, the eldest son of the fourth and previous Dragon King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and his father's third wife, Queen (Ashi) Tshering Yangdon. Royal Profile: King Harald V of Norway

King Harald V of Norway was born 21 February 1937, just outside of Olso, Norway, the only son and youngest child of Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha. He has two older sisters,  Princess Ragnhild (1930) and Princess Astrid (1932). At the time of his birth, the succession laws in Norway were salic, otherwise known as male-only. As of 1990, the succession laws changed so it gives the oldest child, regardless of gender as heir (for example,
Prince Haakon's oldest daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra will be queen regent).

When then Prince Harald was just three years old, he and his family fled to Sweden and then to the United States for the remainder of the war. In May (he,his mother & sisters) and June (his father) 1945, the family returned to Norway, which was widely celebrated by the people of Norway.

After the family's return to Norway, Prince Harald began to attend school at Smestad School, with a security guard stationed in the halls for his protection. Other than having a security guard follow him everywhere, his school days were relatively typical. He received his school leaving certificate from Oslo Cathedral School in 1955. After his formal education ended, he began a military career by attending   the Norwegian Cavalry Officers’ Training School and went on to finish his military education at the Military Academy in 1959. From 1960-1962, he studied at Oxford University's Balliol College, where he earned a degree in social science, history and economics.

When his grandfather, King Haakon VII died in the fall of 1957, Prince Harald became Crown Prince Harald. It was at this time, that Crown Prince Harald began to attend to affairs of the estate, like attending the Council of State meetings, and acting as regent for his father in hs abesence. When he was 23 years old, he made his first official state visit abroad to the United States to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the American-Scandinavian Foundation.

In the spring of 1968, after a nine year courtship, his engagement to commoner Miss Sonja Haraldsen from Vinderen, Norway was announced. The wedding was held in Oslo Cathedral on 29 August 1968. The newlywed Crown Prince and Crown Princess were received with great jubilation by people throughout the country. The Crown Princess assumed her share of the official duties. They have two children, Princess Märtha Louise, born on 22 September 1971, and Crown Prince Haakon, born on 20 July 1973.

In the spring of 1990, his father fell ill and Crown Prince Harald became regent. In 1991, his father died, and he ascended the throne.

In his spare time, he is an avid hunter and fisherman. He is also an Olympian, having appeared on Norway's behalf for the 1964 Sailing Summer Games in Toyko.

Today the King has been married for 43 years (will be 44 years in August), and has two children, two children-in-laws, four granddaughters, a grandson and a step-grandson.

Op-Ed: Royals and Titles

I feel the need to explain Royal Titles.
Don’t ask why, just come with me and read this one.
British Title Rules:
1.       Letters patent issued in 1917 (and still remaining in force today) assign a princely status and the style of Royal Highness to all male-line children & grandchildren of a monarch.
Examples:
a.       Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales. Therefore, at birth his sons were also titled Prince of Wales. However, since Prince William was created Duke of Cambridge, William’s children will be Prince/Princess of Cambridge once Prince Charles ascends the throne. Prior to this, Prince William’s children will be given the styles of Duke’s children (Lady{daughters}/Viscount{eldest son}/Lord {younger sons} {Name} Mountbatten-Windsor).
b.      Prince Andrew is Prince Andrew, Duke of York. Because he has a dukedom of somewhere, his daughters are Princesses of York.
c.       Princess Anne, The Princess Royal’s children aren’t entitled to any sort of style because their father does not have any title or style and he refused one upon marriage.
2.       If a bride (such as Catherine Middleton or Lady Diana Spencer or HSH Princess Caroline of Monaco) comes from royal status of her own rights (Princess Caroline), she is granted the same rank as her husband, but if she isn’t (Catherine  & Diana), she is granted the feminine version of her husband’s title. Think of the title as Mrs. When a woman marries, she isn’t ordinarially addressed as Mrs. Amber Brown, is she when her husband is involved? For example, a letter to both isn’t addressed Mr. Joe Brown and Mrs. Amber Brown, is it? NO. It’s addressed Mr. & Mrs. Joe Brown. British titles are like that too.
Examples:
a.        When HSH Princess Caroline of Monaco married Prince Ernst-August of Hanover, who is legally a British prince, she became HRH Princess Caroline of Hanover, not HRH Princess Ernst-August of Hanover, but when he married Chantal Hochuli in the 1980s, she had been considered HRH Princess Ernst-August of Hanover, because she never was a princess in her own rights.
b.      When Sophie Rhys-Jones married Prince Edward, her title became HRH Prince Edward Antony Richard Louis, Countess of Wessex.
c.       When Catherine Middleton became the wife of Prince William, she legally gained the title Her Royal Highness Princess William Arthur Phillip Louis, Duchess of Cambridge.
d.      When Camilla Parker-Bowels joined the British Royal Family in 2005, she became:  The Princess Charles Philip Arthur George, Princess of Wales and Countess of Chester, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay, Countess of Carrick, Baroness of Renfrew, Lady of the Isles, Princess of Scotland and the same with Prince Charles’s first wife, Lady Diana Spencer.
e.      Princess Michael of Kent. She is the wife of Prince Michael of Kent. Because he was not given a dukedom and she was not a princess in her own right, she is styled as a princess of Kent with her husband’s name.

Get it?
Good.
Not that difficult to understand. It’s not rocket science.

Now with the only other one I know the rules for: Monaco.
Monaco Princely Family members are given titles as favors of the Prince. If the Prince wishes to give you a title, he can, and no title of them is hereditary or are there courtesy titles to children of parents of nobility nor does it have anything to do with the male line.
For example:
1.       When Princesses Caroline & Stephanie’s children were born, they requested that their father not grant the titles Prince/Princess to their children in efforts to give them semi-normal lives. Given the fact that Prince Albert was ahead of them both and everyone thought he would eventually marry and have children of his own that would eventually put Prince Rainier's daughters and their children on the back burner, Prince Rainier agreed with both of his daughters' requests and did not give their children titles.
2.       When Princess Antoinette, Baroness of Massy died last March, her only son did not inherit the Barony of Massy. Nor did her daughter, Baroness Elisabeth-Anne. Baroness Elisabeth-Anne is a baroness by her first husband, Baron Bernard Taubert-Natta.
Now that you’ve read this, you won’t go around referring to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge as Princess Kate or calling the Casiraghis and Ducruets Prince or Princess of Monaco, will you?
I hope not.

Royal Profile: Prince Friso of The Netherlands

Prince Who?
You mean that prince who was nearly killed by an avalanche this week in Austria?
Yes. And no.
I'm talking about the second son of Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands. Younger brother of Prince Williem-Alexander.
Oh. Right. Him. Yeah.
Anyway-Since he's been in the news A LOT recently due to his accident, I thought for my own curiosity (since I don't know much about the Dutch Royals) and yours, I'd do a Royal Profile of Prince Friso. So here you go!

His Royal Highness Prince Johan Friso Bernhard Christiaan David of Orange-Nassau, Count of Orange-Nassau, Jonkheer van Amsberg  was born 25 September 1968, the second son of then Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands and her husband Claus van Amsberg, who was a German diplomat. His godparents are King Harald V of Norway, Johan Christian Baron von Jenisch, J.H. van Roijen, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and Christina von Amsberg. He has one elder brother,Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange and one younger brother, Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands.

He earned a degree in Mechanical engineering from University of California, Berklee in 1988. While there, he joined the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. From 1988-1994, he studied (and obtained) an engineer's degree in aeronautical engineering at Delft University of Technology. He also obtained a MSc degree in economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he also took courses in Dutch Law.

He spent a year (1995-1996) at the Amsterdam branch of the international management consultancy McKinsey. He then moved on to work for Goldman Sachs International in London as Vice President from 1998-2003. After that, he became part-time co-president of TNO Space in Delft in 2004. In 2006, he became Managing Director in the London office of the private investment and advisory firm Wolfensohn & Co. He is a co-founder of the MRI Centre in Amsterdam and is also a founding shareholder of Wizzair, the largest low-cost airline in Eastern Europe. Prince Friso is honorary chairman of the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development (a position he holds together with his younger brother Prince Constantijn). The Prince also serves as a director and supervisory director of various companies. Presently, he is working as CFO for a uranium enrichment company called URENCO.

He married Mabel Wisse Smit on 24 April 2004. Because he did not seek Parliament's approval before marrying, he lost his claims to the throne, and his spot in the Royal House. He nor his children from this union are in line for the Dutch throne. Considering his older brother, and his mother's heir-apparent, has three daughters, it was highly unlikely that he would ever become King of The Netherlands anyway. He and Princess Mabel have two daughters:
  • Countess Emma Luanna Ninette Sophie,  Jonkvrouwe van Amsberg, who was born in London on 26 March 2005.
  • Countess Joanna Zaria Nicoline Milou,  Jonkvrouwe van Amsberg, who was born in London on 18 June 2006
During the family's annual skiing holiday last week, he was caught in an avalanche. His condition is said to be critical but stable. Keep it here for updates on his condition.

He was born at Buckingham Palace, and baptized two months later. His godparents were: : The Duke of Gloucester (his maternal granduncle); Princess Alexandra of Kent (his 1st cousin once removed); the Earl of Euston; the Lord Elphinstone (his 1st cousin once removed); and Mrs Harold Phillips.

He was named after his paternal grandfather, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark.

One thing that set him apart from his older siblings was that he was the first child born to the reigning monarch since Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Beatrice (coincidentally, his older daughter was named Beatrice). However, like his siblings, his early education began with governesses at the palace. He eventually went on to attend Heatherdown Preparatory School and Gordonstoun. In the spring term of 1977, he attended a study abroad program at Lakefield College School in Lakefield, Ontario. He graduated from Gordonstoun in 1977 with A-Levels in English, history, economics, and political science.

Instead of attending University, he opted for a military career. From 1977-1978, he attended Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. In November 1978, Prince Andrew officially joined the Royal Navy the following year, and in December he underwent various sporting tests and examinations at the Aircrew Selection Centre, at RAF Biggin Hill, along with further tests and interviews at HMS Daedalus, and interviews at the Admiralty Interview Board, HMS Sultan. In the spring of 1979, he was enrolled in Royal Naval College Flight, training to become a naval airforce pilot. He was accepted and trained for 12 years in May 1979 as a Naval air-force pilot.

After being awarded his "Wings", he moved onto more advanced training on the Sea King helicopter, and conducted operational flying training until 1982, when he joined his first front-line unit, 820 Naval Air Squadron, serving aboard the aircraft carrier, HMS Invincible. He continued his active naval career until 2001. In February 2010, he was appointed Honorary Rear Admiral.

He married Sarah Fergeson in 1986. They had two daughters:
  • Princess Beatrice Elizabeth Mary of York (1988)
  • Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena of York (1990)
They divorced in 1996, but remained friends for their daughter's sakes, often vacationing and doing normal family things together with their daughters.

Her love came with controversy however, because her betrothed was Catholic. Due to this, she renounced her and her descendants rights to the throne and converted to Catholicism in 1975. Her engagement was announced on Valentine's Day, 1975. They were married in June 1975. Then they moved back to New York, and later moved back to The Netherlands. Royal Profile: HRH Princess Marie of Denmark

Marie Agathe Odile Cavallier (aka Princess Marie of Denmark) was born 6 Februrary 1976 in Paris, France, the only child of Alain Cavallier and Françoise Grassiot. Her parents divorced when she was young, and both remarried and gave Marie four younger half brothers. Upon her parents divorce, she moved to Geneva, Switzerland with her mother, where she attended Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil.

After obtaining her Bacclaurate from Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil, she attended Babson College, studying international relations and economics, however she never graduated from Babson. Instead, after a brief sint at Babson, she transfered to a school in Geneva to study Economics, then transferred to Marymount Manhattan College, where she obtained a Bachelors of Arts.

After her university years, Marie worked in the field of public relations for Estée Lauder, and ING Numismatic Group SA, and other varying postitions for companies such as DoubleClick Inc, Media Marketing, Reuters financial news agency Radianz, REInvest in Geneva, ING Numismatic Group SA.

Marie speaks a varitey of languages. Her native tongue is French. She also speaks Spanish, Italian, Danish and English.

She first came to media attention around 2005, when she was spotted vacationing with Prince Joachim. In 2007, she joined her prince and his family for the holiday season and for a skiing trip to Switzerland. It was announced in October of that year that she and Prince Joachim would marry. In May 2008, they were married. This is when Marie became Her Royal Highness Princess Marie of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat  and a naturalized Danish citizen and member of the Church of Denmark.

Princess Marie took her role as Princess of Denmark in stride, becoming a patron of many important organizations in Denmark after becoming a princess. So now she was a princess, a wife, a daughter, a stepdaughter, a half-sister, a niece, an aunt, a sister-in-law, a daughter-in-law, stepmother, what was left? Oh. Right. Motherhood. Princess Marie tackled that too in May of 2009, when she gave birth to her first child, Prince Henrik. In January 2012, she became a mother again, this time to a baby girl.

Royal Profile: HM Queen Elizabeth of The United Kingdom

Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of York (today known as Queen Elizabeth II) was born 21 April 1926 in London, the oldest daughter of Prince Albert, Duke of York and Elizabeth, Duchess of York. She was named after her mother, her paternal great-grandmother, and her paternal grandmother. Princess Lilibet as she was known became a big sister to Princess Margaret of York on 21 August 1930.

She and her sister were educated in history, language, literature and music by their mother and governess as children. Princesss Elizabeth received private tuition in constitutional history from Henry Marten, Vice-Provost of Eton College, and learned French from a succession of native-speaking governesses. A Girl Guides company, the 1st Buckingham Palace Company, was formed specifically so she could socialize with girls her own age. Later she was enrolled as a Sea Ranger.

At her birth, she was third in line for succession, after her uncle, Prince Edward (later King Edward), and her father. Growing up, it was unexpected that she would ever become queen as the world expected that her uncle would marry and have a family of his own. In 1936, her grandfather died and her uncle succeed the throne. Later that same year, her uncle would abdicate to marry an American divorcee socialite, leaving her father to become King, and she to become first in line.

In the mid 1920s and 1930s, Princess Elizabeth's parents took on many tours of duty to the United Kingdom's overseas territories. More often than not, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret remained in the care of governesses in England as their father thought they were too young to undertake public tours abroad. In 1927, her parents toured Australia and New Zeland, and in 1939, they toured Canada and the United States.

During the second world war, Princess Elizabeth spent much of her time traveling throughout England to the families various estates. It was suggested by senior politicians that the young princesses be evacuated to Canada, but Queen Elizabeth (their mother), dismissed that idea claiming they would not go without her, and she would not go with out their father-who would never leave England. In 1940, the 14-year-old Elizabeth made her first radio broadcast during the BBC's Children's Hour, addressing other children who had been evacuated from the cities.

In 1942, she was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards. She took on her first solo public appearance on a visit to the Grenadier Guards in 1943. When the budding ruler began to reach her 18th birthday in April of 1944, laws were changed so that she could act as one of five Counsellors of State in the event of her father's incapacity or absence abroad. In February 1945, she joined the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service, as an honorary Second Subaltern with the service number of 230873, where she trained as a driver and mechanic, and five months later in July 1945, she was promoted to honorary Junior Commander.

Her father feeling that the title "the Princess of Wales" was more suited for the wife of the heir apparent, chose not to give Princess Elizabeth the title on her 18th birthday. Instead, she was inducted into the Welsh Gorsedd of Bards at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1946.

Before her marriage, she met her future husband several times. The first time she met the love of nearly sixty years now was in 1934, when he was 13 years old and she was only 8 years old at a mutual cousin Princess Marina of Greece & Denmark's wedding. The pair would meet again later in 1937 when he was 16 years old and she was 11 years old. However the sparks began to fly after Princess Elizabeth toured the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth (where Prince Philip was a cadet at the time) in 1939. Upon sight of him, she immediately fell in love and the two began to exchange letters. The pair dated for six years before being secretly engaged in 1946. The formal announcement of their engagement took place on 9 July 1947, a few months after Princess Elizabeth's 21st Birthday. The Royal pair wed on 20 November 1947, and would go on to have four children, and eight grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter (and another on the way).

In 1951, her father was declining in health, so she was more frequently seen standing in his place at events. In October 1951, she toured Canada and the United States. On that trip, her secretary carried a drafter of the accession declaration for use in case of the death of Princess Elizabeth's father. Early in 1952, when her children were young (Prince Charles was only 4 years old, and Princess Anne was only two years old at the time), she and her husband began a tour of Kenya, Australia and New Zeland. They never made it to Australia or New Zeland. Shortly after their arrival in Kenya, they received word of the death of King George V, her father. Prince Phillip broke the news to the new queen. They returned to the United Kingdom quickly, where they moved into Buckingham Palace.

Today, the Queen remains a popular figure in The United Kingdom and commonwealth realms, as well as abroad. She is mother to four, grandmother to eight, great-grandmother to (almost) two, aunt to 21, godmother to 29.
