Queen Sirikit of Thailand was born 12 August 1932 the eldest daughter and the third child of Prince Nakkhatra Mangkala Kitiyakara, the son of Prince Kitiyakara Voralaksana, and Mom Luang Bua Sanidvongs. Her name, which was given by King Prajadhipok, means "the Greatness of Kitiyakhon". She had three siblings; two elder brothers and a younger sister: Prof. Mom Rajawongse Galyanakit Kitiyakara, M.D. (1929-1987) Mom Rajawongse Adulyakit Kitiyakara (1930-2004) Mom Rajawongse Busba Kitiyakara (1934) Sirikit was raised by her maternal grandparents for a year after her birth, as her father went to United States to work as the secretary of the Siamese Royal Embassy at Washington D.C. He had a worldly education, spending his primary years in Thailand, before moving on to England and Australia for his upper educational studies. The Prince undertook military training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon in Canberra, Australia, and also completed an arts degree at Sukhothai Thammatirat University in Bangkok. He also took a period of time as a Buddhist monk { Source }. In 1977, he married his maternal first cousin Princess Soamsavali Kitiyakara { Source } , a year later his first child was born { Source }. She studied chemistry at Kasetsart University, earning a 1st Class Honours bachelor's degree in 1979. She also earned a doctoral degree in Science from Mahiold University in 1985.
