Royal Profile:Princess Mako of Akishino

Princess Mako of Akishino was born 23 October 1991 as the first granddaughter of Emperor Aiko and Empress Michiko and the first child and eldest daughter of Furmihito, Prince Akishino and Kiko, Princess Akishino. She has two younger siblings:
  • Princess Kako (1994)
  • Prince Hisahito (2006)


She was educated at Gakushuin School throughout her primary education {Source}. In 2010, she began residing in Europe, where she began studying English at the University College Dublin {Source}. In 2012, she attended the University of Edinburgh {Source}. She graduated from International Christian University in Toyko in March 2014 with a degree in Art and Cultural Heritage {Source}. In September 2014, she returned to England to begin graduate study work in museology at the University of Leicester {Source}.


In addition to studying in the United Kingdom, Princess Mako has done some extensive travelling. In 2006, she visited Austria for a few weeks on a school sponsored homestay program {Source}. 


As she has grown older, she began to take on official functions in her family. In 2006, she accompanied her father at a religious ceremony at the Ise  Shrine {Source}. In 2011, she became of age in Japan, therefore she was conferred Grand Cordon of the Order of the Precious Crown in October. Since October 2011, she has attended official functions as a member of the Imperial Family. She has attended official events such as the New Year's Celebrations {2012}, the  All-Japan High School Cultural Festival {2012}, just to name a few.
