Royal Profile: Rachel Meghan Markle

Rachel Meghan Markle was born 4 August 1981 as the only child of Thomas W. Markle and Doria Radlan {Source}. She also has several older paternal half-siblings.

Miss Markle grew up in Hollywood, Los Angles, California in the United States. She took an early interest in the film and television industry, mostly thanks to her father who worked as a lighting director for television shows such as Married...with Children.

She studied at a girls' Roman Catholic college before graduating from Northwestern University School of Communication in 2003 - where she double-majored in theatre and international relations {Source}.

After college, she worked for the US Embassy in Buenos Aires {Source}. Upon returning for Argentina, she began to try out for acting jobs, and worked as a calligrapher on the side {Source}. Miss Markle is best known for her role in legal drama Suits, portraying  Rachel Zane {Source}. Markle is also active on social media, having founded the lifestyle blog thetig.com  {Source}.

Meghan is an active humanitarian campaigner and was last year named global ambassador for World Vision Canada {Source}. Her activism started at a young age. At 11, she forced a soap manufacturer to alter an advert after she wrote a letter to then first lady Hillary Clinton and other high-profile figures complaining that it implied women belonged in the kitchen{Source}. As a youngster, she carried out humanitarian efforts after her parents exposed her to extreme poverty in countries such as Jamaica as a child. She traveled to Rwanda for the Clean Water Campaign, while Harry has recently spent time in Malawi{Source}.  Committed to gender equality work, she has worked with United Nations Women, where she received a standing ovation for her speech on International Women's Day {Video}.
