Royal Profile: The Lady Sarah Chatto

Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Chatto (formerly Lady Sarah Armstorng-Jones) was born 1 May 1965, the only daughter of the 1st Earl of Snowdon and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and thus is the only biological niece of Queen Elizabeth II. She is also the youngest granddaughter of King George V and Queen Elizabeth. Being a niece of the Queen, she is in line for the throne of the UK and the commonwealth countires, after her niece, The Hon. Margarita Armstrong-Jones, in 18th place. At her birth, she was 7th place.

She attended the Camberwell School of Art and Middlesex Polytechnic (Middlesex University since 1992). She is a trained painter, she is represented by the Redfern Gallery. In 2004, she was appointed Vice President of The Royal Ballet.

Unlike her senior royal cousins and their children, she and her brother attract far less media attention, which has lead in their favor, giving them successes in their lives. Her aunt keeps a close relationship with her and her brother, often inviting them to royal events and to the family Christmas at Sandringham {Source}. She has three younger half siblings-two sisters and a brother. Two of her half-siblings were from affairs that her father had in 1960 and 1998-her sister Polly and brother Jasper{Source}. Her sister Lady Frances von Hofmannsthal was born in 1979 from her father's second marriage{Source}.

She married Daniel Chatto on 14 July 1994, and they have two sons, both of whom are in line for the throne like their mother:

  • Samuel Chatto (1996), 19th place
  • Arthur Chatto (1998), 20th place
She is godmother to her cousin, Prince Edward's daughter, Lady Louise {Source} and her mother's cousin, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester 's elder daughter, The Lady Rose Gilman {Source}. She was also a bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin, Prince Charles of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, and because she was the eldest of the girls, she was considered the "maid-of-honour" {Source}.
