Royal Profile: Crown Prince Fredrik of Denmark

Crown Frederik André Henrik Christian of Denmark,  Count of Monpezat, was born on 26 May 1968, the elder of two sons to Queen Margarethe II & Prince Henrik of Denmark {Source}. He is first in line to succeed to the throne and is the regent when HM The Queen is out of the country {Source}. 

He was christened at Holmens Kirke (the naval church) on 24 June 1968  {Source}. His godparents were{Source}:

  • Prince Georg of Denmark (his maternal 3rd cousin 1x removed) 
  • Queen Anne-Marie of The Hellenes (his maternal aunt)
  • Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg

Denmark's future King attended the Krebs' Skole from 1974-1981. His early years (1974-1976), he was associated with the school via a private tutor {Source}. During the 1982-1983 school year, the future Danish King attended École des Roches in Normandy, France {Source}. In 1986, the Crown Prince graduated from Øregaard Gymnasium{Source}. In 1995, he graduated from the University of Aarhus with a MSc (Political science) {Source}. He also studied at Harvard University during the 1992-1993 school year{Source}. 

The Crown Prince has an extensive international business background {Source}. In 1994, the young prince served at the Danish UN Mission and was posted at the Royal Danish Embassy in Paris as a first Secretary of the Embassy {Source}.

The future monarch of Denmark also has an extensive military background. He has taken part in several training courses in the Danish military{Source}. Crown Prince Frederik’s military education began in 1986 as a recruit in the Queen’s Life Guard Regiment{Source}. In 1988, he was appointed as a lieutenant of the reserve{Source}.. After obtaining that rank, the Crown Prince became a platoon commander in the Royal Danish Hussar Guard Regiment in 1988{Source}.. In 1989, he was appointed as a first lieutenant of the reserve{Source}.The Crown Prince completed frogman training with the Royal Danish Navy Frogman Corps in 1995{Source}. The same year, the Crown Prince was appointed as a first lieutenant of the reserve (navy), and he was appointed as a lieutenant commander of the reserve (navy) in 1997{Source}.. Also in 1997, the Crown Prince was appointed as a captain of the reserve (army), and in 2000, he was appointed as a captain of the reserve (air force){Source}. Between 2001 and 2002, the Crown Prince completed further training step II for leaders at the Royal Danish Defense College, and in 2002, he was appointed as a major of the reserve (army and air force) as well as a commander (navy){Source}.. In 2002 and 2003, Crown Prince Frederik served as a staff officer at Defense Command Denmark, and he also became a senior lecturer with the Institute of Strategy at the Royal Danish Defense College in 2003{Source}. In April 2004, the Crown Prince was appointed as a commander,senior grade in the navy, lieutenant colonel in the army and lieutenant colonel in the air force{Source}.

As a future world leader, the Crown Prince of Denmark speaks many languages {Source}. His native tounge is Danish {Source}. He also speaks his father's native tongue, French {Source}. He also speaks English and German {Source}.

The Prince has participated in numerous expeditions. In 1986, he participated in an expedition to Mongolia {Source}. In 2000, he participated in "Expedition Sirius 2000" (a 4 month 2795 KM dog-sled expedition in the northern part of Greenland) {Source}{Source}. 

He met his future bride at an Australian pub during the 2000 Sydney Olympics{Source}. They were wed on 14 May 2004 in Copenhagen Cathedral{Source}. Together, they have four children:
Today, the future monarch resides with his family at the Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace and also in Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg Palace {Source}.
