He attended his secondary education in France. After receiving his high school diploma, he studied at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland) and Innsbruck (Austria), earning a degree in Economics and Social Sciences.
On 22 September 1984, he married Princess Astrid of Belgium, The Archduchess of Austria-Este, and they set up a home in Switzerland, from 1984-1993. Then they returned with their children to Belgium. Their five children and daughter-in-law and granddaughter are:
