Royal Profile: Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, The Duchess of Brabant

Princess Élisabeth Thérèse Marie Hélène of Belgium, The Duchess of Brabant was born via C-section the eldest child of King Phillippe and Queen Mathilde, Duchess of Brabant on 25 October 2001{Source}. She has two younger brothers and a younger sister-Prince Emmanuel, Prince Gabriel &Princess Eléonore.

She was baptized on 9 December 2001, her godparents are:

She is named for the following:

  • Elisabeth is for her great-great grandmother Elisabeth of Bavaria.
  • Thérèse could be for her maternal great-great-grandmother Countess Teresa Sobanska.
  • Marie is for the Virgin Mary as per tradition with Catholic Royalty.
  • Hélène is for her maternal aunt and godmother Countess Hélène d'Udekem d'Acoz.

Ten years prior to her birth, a succession law was passed allowing females equal rights to the throne as their male counterparts. This means that once her father takes the throne, Princess Elisabeth will become the heir apparent. When this does happen, she will make Belgian history by becoming Belgium's 1st-ever Queen Regent.

Like her elder cousins, she is enrolled in Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege. Again, another historical moment: no future Belgian monarch's education has begun in Dutch. She also attends dance classes that are conducted in Dutch.

She may only be twelve years old, but the young future monarch has already taken on several royal duties. In 2006, she attended the Te Deum in honor of Belgian National Day for the first time{Photos}. Because Liechtenstein's monarchy operates on agnatic primogeniture succession laws (i.e. inherited by the first-born male of the oldest family line, to the total exclusion of females), Princess Marie Caroline is not in line for the throne after her brothers.

Due to the Liechtenstein Princely Family is fiercely private on the international level, little is known about her or her life today. However, other than the occasional low-key Princely Family appearance such as Liechtenstein's National Day, she seems to live a fairly normal life {Photos, Liechtenstein National Day 2012}

Because her father, she and her sisters *technically* lost their place in succession with the death of Prince Rainier in 2005, she and her family are known to keep out of the main limelight. Other than the occasional all family appearance, she's kept away from the media's glare. Because of her age, she did not attend Prince Albert's 2011 wedding with her parents and three older sisters.

She attended the private catholic school, L'Institut François d’Assise Nicolas Barré, along with her older sisters and second cousins once removed Princess Alexandra of Hanover and Camille Gottlieb until at least 2010 when her family moved to South Africa. She should presently be in the final year of nursery school.
