Royal Profile: Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex

Rachel Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, The Countess of Dumbarton, & Baroness Kilkeel was born 4 August 1981 as the only child of Thomas W. Markle and Doria Radlan {Source}. She also has several older paternal half-siblings.

The Duchess of Sussex grew up in Hollywood, Los Angles, California in the United States. She took an early interest in the film and television industry, mostly thanks to her father who worked as a lighting director for television shows such as Married...with Children.

She studied at a girls' Roman Catholic college before graduating from Northwestern University School of Communication in 2003 - where she double-majored in theatre and international relations {Source}.

She is an active humanitarian campaigner and was named global ambassador for World Vision Canada in 2017{Source}. Her activism started at a young age. At 11, she forced a soap manufacturer to alter an advert after she wrote a letter to then first lady Hillary Clinton and other high-profile figures complaining that it implied women belonged in the kitchen{Source}. As a youngster, she carried out humanitarian efforts after her parents exposed her to extreme poverty in countries such as Jamaica as a child. She traveled to Rwanda for the Clean Water Campaign, while Harry has recently spent time in Malawi{Source}. Committed to gender equality work, she has worked with United Nations Women, where she received a standing ovation for her speech on International Women's Day {Video}.

After working as a working royal for several months upon her marriage and the birth of her first child, she and her prince announced their their stunning Royal Exit. After their announcement, The Duchess of Sussex stayed in Canada with their son, while The Duke of Sussex proceeded to tie up loose ends. After several months in Canada the pair were joined by his father. In early 2020, the family is said to have made the move to Los Angeles to be closer to Archie's maternal grandmother. As part of their agreement to step back as full time royals-they maintain their royal titles and status, but cannot publicly represent the Queen.
