Royal Profile: Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence

Vice Admiral Sir Timothy James Hamilton Laurence was born 1 March 1955 the son of Commander Guy Stewart Laurence, who was also a salesman for a marine engine manufacturer, and Barbara Alison Laurence.

During his childhood years, he attended several prep schools and was involved in numerous activities. He began attended The New Beacon Preparatory School, before moving on toSevenoaks School, Kent and attending University College, University of Durham on a naval scholarship, receiving a Bachelors of Science in geography with 2nd upper class honors {Source}. During his university years, he was part of the student newspaper and captain of the cricket team.

In the 1970s, he began serving as a member of the British Navy, working his way up the ranks. He attended the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth for his initial training. After completing his training, he maintianed a post on the HMS Aurora. In 1973, he was promoted from midshipman. Two years later, he was promoted again, to acting sub-lieutenant. In 1977, he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1978, he served on he HMS Vernon. In 197, he was moved to the HMS Pollingon. In the 1980s, his naval career continued, where he served as a Navagating Officer on the Royal Yacht, HMY Britannia, and on the HMS Sheiffield and HMS Cygnet. In 1985, he took a course in Principal Warefare Officer Training aboard the HMSDryad and was promoted to Lieuenant Commander, and moved to the HMS Alacrity. In 1986, he attended a the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Tactics Course (RANTACCS) at HMAS Watson, Sydney. Upon graduating from that, he was appointed as Equerry to The Queen, and was reported o Commander in 1988. In 1989, he was posted on the HMS Boxer. In the early 1990s, he served as naval staff in the Ministry of Defence in London, and was appointed Military Assistant to the Secretary of State for Defence. In the mid-1990s, he was promoted to Captain and was appointed to the HMS Cumberland. In 1996, he was stationed on the HMSMontrose, where he served as captian of the Plymouth-based F6. Summer 1997, he was found back at the Ministry of Defence working as Naval Staff then as the Commondore as a member of the Implementation Team for the 1998 Strategic Defence Review. In the late 1990s, he served as a Hudson Visiting Fellow at St. Antony's College, Oxford, where he wrote a paper on the relationship between Humanitarian Assistance and Peacekeeping. After his Fellowship, he was posted to the Joint Services Command and Staff College as Commondore as the Assistant Commandant (Navy). In the early 2000s, he found himself back (again) at the Ministry of Defence, this time as the Director of Navy Resources and Programs. In 2004, he was again promoted, this time to Rear Admiral, and made Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff, with responsibilities for Resources and Plans. Three years later, he was promoted yet again, this time to Vice Admiral, and made Chief Excutive of Defence Estates (now known as Defence Infrastructure Organisation) {Source}. He also became Head of Profession for the British Government's Property Asset Management community in 2009. He is an Honoary Member of the Royal Institution of Charter Surveyors. By the end of 2010, he had retired from his naval carrer and now pursues a portfolio of mainily non-excutive and charitable interests with emphasis on property and regeneration. He serves on the Board of the project managerment company, Capita Symonds, as well as serving in various organizations in varying capacity. He also serves as a Senior Military Adviser to PA Consulting

During his time serving as Queen Elizabeth's Equerry in the 1980s, he met the woman that would become his wife later on in their lives, her only daughter The Princess Royal. They were married in December 1992, a few months after her divorce was final from her first marriage. Upon their marriage, he received no peerage from his former boss turned mother-in-law, but was Knighted in June 2011 with the Royal Victorian Order. During his marriage to Princess Anne, they leased a flat in the Dolphin Square Complex, as well as maintained her home in Scotland. Today, they still have her home in Scotland, but also maintain an apartment at St. James Palace {Source}.
