Royal Profile: Princess Josephine of Denmark

Princess Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat was born on 8 January 2011 as the second daughter and youngest child of Crown Prince Fredrik of Denmark & Crown Princess Mary of Denmark{Source}. She has two older siblings and a twin brother:
  • Prince Christian of Denmark, Count of Monpezat (2005)
  • Princess Isabella of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat (2007)
  • Prince Vincent of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat (2011)

On 14 April 2011, she and her twin brother were christened. Her godparents were the following{Source}:
  • Princess Marie of Denmark (paternal aunt)
  • Patricia Bailey (maternal aunt)
  • Prince Carlo, Duke of Castro (friend of her parents)
  • Count Bendt Wedell
  • Birgitte Handwerk

Although they are only six years old, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent have already taken part in several royal engagements. In 2011, they took part in a Royal Tour of Australia with their parents at 11 months old {Photos} and their first summer photocall {Photos}. In 2012, they took part in their grandmother's 40th succession anniversary {Photos}, however, during the family's summer photocall, only Prince Vincent was present. In 2013, she and her brother made an apperance at a winter photocall with their family {Photos}, attended Queen Margrethe II's 73rd birthday celebrations {Photos}, and both twins were back for the family's annual summer photocall {Photos}. In 2014, they appeared at their grandfather's 80th birthday celebrations{Photos}, made an appearance with their family for the summer photocall {Photos}, made an official visit to Greenland with their family {Photos} and paid a visit to Tivoli Gardens{Photos}. On 3 August 2014, during the family's official visit to Greenland, Josephine, her parents and siblings, took part in a tree planting in Qaqortoq's new poplar grove, Ivalos og Miniks Poppellund, named after Josephine and her brother who are known by their Greenlandic middle names in Greenland {Video}. In 2015, the twins, their big sister Isabella and mother attended Organic Day {Photos}, Queen Margrethe II's 75th birthday celebrations {Photos} , the family's annual summer photocall {Photos}. In 2016, they took part in the celebrations of his grandmother's 74th birthdaythe summer 2016 photocall, and attended the opening performance of The Nutcraker, which his grandmother was a designer of the sets and costumes.


Princess Josephine is currently 5th in succession for the Danish throne after her father and three older siblings. Princess Josephine is approximately 26 minutes younger than her twin brother. The royal pair is also distantly in succession for the British throne.
